Tools

  • Cup plunger
  • Bucket
  • Adjustable pliers
  • Flashlight

Materials

  • Rubber gloves
  • Old towels
  • Hot water
  • Dish soap

Safety

  • Turn off the faucet before working on the drain.
  • Place a bucket and towels under the trap before loosening any fittings.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection if opening the trap or handling dirty water.
  • Do not mix chemical drain cleaners with any other product.
  • Stop if you notice sewage odor, multiple drains backing up, or leaking pipe joints.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Prepare the area

    • Clear items from under the sink.
    • Turn off the faucet.
    • Place towels under the sink and set a bucket below the trap.
    • If there is standing water in the sink, remove some with a cup or container so it will not splash easily.

Check: The cabinet area is clear and protected. · A bucket is positioned under the trap. · Water will not spill excessively when you begin.

  2. Step 2: Remove visible debris from the drain opening

    • Put on gloves.
    • Take out the sink strainer or stopper if present.
    • Pull out any visible food debris or buildup from the drain opening.
    • Run a small amount of hot water to see if the blockage was near the top.

Check: The drain opening is free of obvious debris. · Water either drains better or confirms the clog is deeper.

  3. Step 3: Plunge the sink

    • Add enough water to cover the plunger cup.
    • If you have a double sink, seal the other drain opening with a wet cloth or stopper.
    • Place the plunger firmly over the clogged drain.
    • Push and pull with a few firm, controlled strokes, then lift the plunger and check drainage.
    • Repeat several times if needed.

Check: The plunger maintains a seal over the drain. · Water begins to drain faster or the water level drops after plunging.

  4. Step 4: Flush with hot water and dish soap

    • Pour a little dish soap into the drain.
    • Follow with hot water in stages, not all at once.
    • Wait a minute and observe the drain speed.

Check: Water drains steadily without backing up quickly. · There is no leaking under the sink.

  5. Step 5: Clean the trap if the sink is still clogged

    • Keep the bucket directly under the curved trap.
    • Use adjustable pliers if needed to loosen the slip nuts carefully.
    • Remove the trap and let water and debris empty into the bucket.
    • Clear out any blockage inside the trap.
    • Reattach the trap securely by hand, tightening gently with pliers only if needed.

Check: Debris was removed from the trap. · The trap is reinstalled evenly and feels secure. · No water leaks from the fittings when tested.

  6. Step 6: Test and finish

    • Run warm water for 30 to 60 seconds.
    • Check underneath the sink for leaks at the trap connections.
    • Wipe up the area and put items back under the sink only after confirming it stays dry.

Check: The sink drains normally. · No drips or leaks appear under the sink. · The work area is clean and dry.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Using too much force on plastic fittings and cracking them.
  • ×Forgetting to seal the second drain on a double sink while plunging.
  • ×Skipping the bucket and towels before removing the trap.
  • ×Using chemical drain cleaner before disassembling the drain.
  • ×Overtightening slip nuts when reinstalling the trap.

When to Call a Professional

  • The clog affects multiple drains in the home.
  • You smell sewage near the sink or drain.
  • The sink repeatedly backs up after clearing attempts.
  • Pipes leak, are corroded, or fittings will not reseal properly.
  • The clog remains after plunging and cleaning the trap.

Notes

  • A cup plunger works better on sinks than a toilet plunger.
  • Hot water helps with grease, but avoid boiling water if you have PVC piping.
  • If you previously used chemical drain cleaner, use extra caution and avoid opening the drain without protective gear.
