- Wear gloves and keep the area well ventilated.
- Do not mix bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaners together.
- Check the oven manual before using commercial cleaners, especially on self-cleaning, convection, or coated interiors.
- Avoid spraying or soaking heating elements, fans, igniters, or electrical openings.
- Wipe away all cleaner residue completely before turning the oven back on.
Steps
Step 1: Prepare the oven
- Turn the oven off and let it cool completely.
- Open a window or turn on ventilation.
- Remove oven racks, trays, thermometers, and any loose debris or burnt food by hand.
- Place a towel or paper under the oven door area if you want to catch drips.
Check: The oven interior is cool to the touch. · All removable items are out of the oven. · Loose crumbs and debris have been cleared.
Step 2: Clean the racks separately
- Soak the racks in warm water with a little dish soap, if they fit in a sink or tub.
- After soaking, scrub them gently with a non-scratch sponge.
- Rinse and set them aside to dry.
Check: The racks are free of grease and baked-on residue. · The racks are rinsed and drying completely.
Step 3: Apply cleaner to the oven interior
- If using baking soda paste, mix baking soda with a small amount of water until spreadable.
- Spread the paste or oven-safe cleaner over the interior surfaces, focusing on greasy or stained areas.
- Avoid heating elements, fans, door seals, igniters, and any openings.
- Let the cleaner sit long enough to loosen grime, following the product label or about 15-30 minutes for baking soda paste.
Check: Cleaner covers the dirty interior surfaces. · Sensitive parts and openings were avoided. · The cleaner has had time to loosen residue.
Step 4: Scrub stuck-on residue
- Use a non-scratch sponge to scrub the interior gently.
- For stubborn spots, use a plastic or silicone scraper carefully without gouging the surface.
- Reapply a small amount of cleaner or paste to heavy buildup if needed.
Check: Grease and residue are lifting from the surface. · No metal tools or abrasive pads were used. · The oven coating and surfaces remain undamaged.
Step 5: Wipe out the oven
- Use a damp cloth to wipe away cleaner and loosened grime.
- Rinse the cloth frequently with clean water and keep wiping until no residue remains.
- If desired, lightly mist with vinegar to help lift baking soda residue, then wipe again with plain water.
Check: No visible cleaner, foam, or paste remains. · Interior surfaces feel clean, not gritty or slippery. · Corners and edges have been wiped thoroughly.
Step 6: Clean the oven door
- Wipe the inside and outside of the door with warm water and dish soap or the same safe cleaner.
- Use a non-scratch sponge on greasy glass.
- Avoid forcing liquid into vents or around seals.
Check: The door glass is clear and grease is removed. · The seal is intact and not soaked. · No cleaner is trapped in edges or vents.
Step 7: Reassemble and dry
- Dry the interior with a clean cloth or leave the door open for a short time.
- Return the dry racks and accessories to the oven.
- If recommended by the cleaner label, heat the empty oven briefly to remove any remaining odor, then let it air out.
Check: The oven is fully dry inside. · Racks and accessories are back in place. · There is no visible residue or strong cleaner smell before cooking.
