Unclog Garbage Disposal
Turn off power, remove any visible blockage safely, free the disposal if it is jammed, reset it if needed, and test it with cold water.
Tools
- Flashlight
- Tongs or needle-nose pliers
- Hex/Allen wrench for the disposal
- Wooden spoon handle or similar nonmetal tool
Materials
- Cold water
- Ice cubes
- Dish soap
Safety
- Turn off the disposal at the wall switch and, if possible, the circuit breaker before working on it.
- Never put your hand inside the disposal chamber.
- Use tongs or pliers to remove debris, not your fingers.
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a garbage disposal.
- Restore power only after the jam is cleared and tools are removed.
- Stop if you notice a leak, burning smell, repeated breaker trips, or grinding that does not clear.
Steps
Step 1: Shut off power and inspect the disposal
- Switch the disposal off at the wall switch.
- If you can access it safely, turn off power at the circuit breaker as well.
- Use a flashlight to look into the disposal opening from above.
Check: The disposal cannot be turned on accidentally. · You can clearly see whether any object is stuck near the impeller.
Step 2: Remove visible debris safely
- Use tongs or needle-nose pliers to pull out any visible food buildup or foreign objects.
- If debris is awkwardly placed, use a wooden spoon handle or similar nonmetal tool to nudge it loose from above.
Check: No visible utensils, bones, fibrous food, or packed debris remain in the chamber. · You did not put your hand inside the disposal.
Step 3: Free a jammed impeller
- Insert the correct hex/Allen wrench into the socket on the bottom center of the disposal.
- Rotate the wrench back and forth gently until the impeller moves freely.
- If your unit does not have a bottom socket, use a wooden spoon handle from above to carefully move the impeller plate back and forth.
Check: The wrench or tool moves with less resistance after several turns. · The impeller is no longer locked in one position.
Step 4: Reset the disposal if needed
- Look for the small reset button on the bottom of the disposal.
- Press it only after the jam has been cleared.
- Leave the switch off while finishing setup.
Check: The reset button stays in when pressed. · No tools or debris remain in or around the disposal.
Step 5: Test with water
- Restore power at the breaker if you turned it off.
- Run cold water into the sink.
- Turn the disposal on briefly and listen.
- If it sounds normal, let cold water run for 15 to 30 seconds after switching it off.
Check: Water drains without backing up. · The disposal runs without humming, burning smell, or harsh metal noise.
Step 6: Flush and freshen the unit
- Run a small amount of dish soap with cold water through the disposal.
- Grind a few ice cubes to help clear residue from the chamber.
Check: The disposal sounds smoother and drains normally. · There is less odor and no immediate clog return.
