Set Up Smart Thermostat
Install and configure a compatible smart thermostat by shutting off HVAC power, documenting and labeling existing wires, mounting the new base, connecting wires exactly as directed, restoring power, and testing all system modes.

Safety
- Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker before removing the old thermostat.
- Confirm the thermostat is compatible with your HVAC system type and voltage before installation.
- Do not install a low-voltage smart thermostat on line-voltage systems.
- Photograph and label every wire before disconnecting anything.
- Match wires to terminal labels, not just wire colors.
- If wires are damaged, unlabeled, or the system behaves unexpectedly, stop and call a licensed HVAC technician.
Steps
Step 1: Check compatibility and requirements
- Read the thermostat manufacturer compatibility guide for your heating and cooling system type.
- Confirm whether your system uses low-voltage control wiring and whether a C-wire is required.
- Check if your system supports the features you want, such as multi-stage heating, heat pump control, or fan control.
- If your thermostat kit includes a compatibility checker app or website, use it before starting.
Check: You know your HVAC system type and voltage. · You have confirmed the thermostat will work with your system. · You know whether you need a C-wire or adapter.
Step 2: Shut off HVAC power
- Turn off power to the heating and cooling system at the breaker panel.
- If your system has separate breakers for furnace, air handler, or condenser controls, turn off the relevant indoor control power as directed by the manufacturer.
- Verify the old thermostat screen is blank or that the system does not respond before touching wires.
Check: Power to the thermostat and HVAC controls is off. · The thermostat display is off or unresponsive. · You are ready to remove the old thermostat safely.
Step 3: Document and label existing wiring
- Remove the old thermostat cover carefully to expose the terminals.
- Take clear photos of the wiring from straight on and from close range.
- Label each wire with its terminal designation, such as R, C, W, Y, G, O/B, or AUX.
- Do not rely on wire color alone because colors are not always standard.
Check: You have at least one clear photo of the existing wiring. · Each wire is labeled by terminal letter. · You can identify where each wire was connected.
Step 4: Remove the old thermostat
- Unscrew the old thermostat base from the wall.
- Keep the wires from slipping back into the wall by bending them gently outward or taping them in place.
- Inspect the wires for fraying, corrosion, or damaged insulation before continuing.
Check: The old thermostat is removed. · The wires are accessible and secured so they will not fall into the wall. · The wire condition appears usable.
Step 5: Install the new mounting plate
- Position the new thermostat base on the wall and level it if appearance matters.
- Feed the labeled wires through the opening in the base.
- Mark and drill holes only if needed, then install anchors and fasten the base securely without overtightening.
Check: The new base is mounted firmly. · The wires pass cleanly through the base opening. · The base is positioned correctly and does not wobble.
Step 6: Connect the wires
- Insert each wire into the matching terminal on the new thermostat base exactly as shown in the manufacturer instructions.
- Use terminal labels from the old setup and the compatibility guide, not wire colors, to determine placement.
- If the thermostat requires a C-wire and you do not have one at the wall, install the included adapter or power extender kit only as directed by the manufacturer.
- Ensure each wire is fully seated and that no bare copper is exposed beyond the terminal if the instructions require that.
Check: Every wire is connected to the correct terminal. · No extra or loose wire strands are touching other terminals. · Any required C-wire solution is installed according to the instructions.
Step 7: Attach the thermostat and restore power
- Snap or mount the thermostat display onto its base.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Wait for the thermostat to power up and complete any startup sequence.
Check: The thermostat powers on normally. · No breaker trips or unusual equipment behavior occurs. · The thermostat display is stable and responsive.
Step 8: Complete setup and test each mode
- Follow the on-screen setup to select your system type, Wi-Fi network, schedule, and any app pairing.
- Test fan-only mode first if available, then test heating, then cooling, allowing the system time to respond.
- Verify the thermostat calls for the correct equipment and that air temperature changes as expected.
- If your system is a heat pump or multi-stage system, confirm those settings are configured correctly in the installer menu or app.
Check: Wi-Fi and app setup are complete if desired. · Heat, cool, and fan functions all respond correctly. · The thermostat schedule and basic settings are saved.
