Replace HVAC Air Filter
Replace the HVAC air filter by turning off the system, removing the old filter, installing the correct new filter in the proper airflow direction, and restoring power.
Materials
- Replacement HVAC air filter (correct size and MERV rating)
Safety
- Turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat before opening the filter slot or access panel.
- If your system has a service switch near the furnace or air handler, turn it off as well.
- Use the correct filter size and match the airflow arrow to the direction of airflow toward the blower/furnace.
- Handle the old filter gently to avoid spreading dust; wear a mask if you are sensitive to allergens.
- Close the access panel or filter cover securely before turning the system back on.
Steps
Step 1: Turn off the HVAC system
- Set the thermostat to Off.
- If your system has a nearby service switch, turn that off too.
Check: The system is not actively blowing air. · The thermostat and any service switch are in the off position.
Step 2: Locate the filter
- Find the filter slot or access panel on the return duct, furnace, or air handler.
- Open the cover or panel carefully if needed.
Check: You can clearly see the filter and how it is installed. · You can see or access the size label on the existing filter.
Step 3: Remove and inspect the old filter
- Slide the old filter out slowly to keep dust from falling off.
- Check the filter size printed on the frame and note the airflow arrow direction.
- Look for excessive dust buildup or damage.
Check: You have the exact filter size from the old filter frame. · You know which way the airflow arrow was facing.
Step 4: Install the new filter
- Confirm the new filter matches the old filter size and intended MERV rating.
- Insert the new filter into the slot with the airflow arrow pointing toward the blower or furnace.
- Slide it in fully so it sits straight and does not bend.
Check: The filter size matches the old one. · The airflow arrow points toward the unit/blower. · The filter is fully seated and not crushed or crooked.
Step 5: Close up and restore power
- Reinstall or close the filter cover or access panel securely.
- Turn the service switch back on if you used it.
- Set the thermostat back to your normal setting.
Check: The panel or cover is secured properly. · Power is restored and the thermostat is back to normal operation.
Step 6: Verify operation
- Run the system for a few minutes.
- Listen for unusual noise and check that airflow seems normal at vents.
Check: Air is flowing normally. · There are no rattles, whistling, or unusual sounds after replacement.
