Replace Thermostat
Replace the thermostat by shutting off HVAC power, documenting and labeling the existing wires, mounting the new base, reconnecting wires to matching terminals, attaching the new thermostat, and testing heating and cooling operation.
Tools

Safety
- Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker before removing the old thermostat.
- Verify power is off by confirming the thermostat display is blank or the system does not respond.
- Take a clear photo of the existing wiring before disconnecting any wires.
- Label each wire before removing it, even if you took a photo.
- Do not let thermostat wires fall back into the wall.
- Match wire terminals exactly to the new thermostat installation instructions.
- If the system uses line-voltage wiring, has damaged insulation, or compatibility is unclear, stop and call a licensed HVAC technician.
- If you smell gas or notice unusual HVAC behavior after installation, stop and call a professional.
Steps
Step 1: Confirm compatibility and prepare
- Check that the new thermostat is compatible with your heating and cooling system type.
- Read the installation guide for any model-specific wiring notes, including whether a C-wire is required.
- Gather tools, batteries, screws, and wire labels before starting.
Check: You know your system type and the new thermostat supports it. · You have the thermostat manual available. · All tools and parts are ready at the work area.
Step 2: Shut off HVAC power
- Turn off power to the furnace, air handler, or HVAC system at the breaker.
- If your system has a nearby service switch, turn that off as well.
- Wait a moment, then confirm the thermostat display is off or that the system does not respond.
Check: Breaker or service switch is off. · The thermostat appears unpowered or the system does not start when adjusted. · You are not working on live low-voltage wiring.
Step 3: Remove the old thermostat cover
- Remove the thermostat faceplate or cover to expose the wiring terminals.
- Avoid pulling hard so you do not disturb the wall wiring.
- Take a clear photo of the terminal labels and wire colors before disconnecting anything.
Check: The wiring terminals are fully visible. · You have at least one clear photo showing wire positions and labels. · The wires are still securely connected at this stage.
Step 4: Label and disconnect the wires
- Label each wire according to the terminal it is connected to, not just by color.
- Loosen the terminal screws or release tabs and remove the wires one at a time.
- Bend or secure the wires so they do not slip back into the wall.
Check: Every wire is labeled by terminal designation. · All wires are free without damage to the copper ends. · The wires are secured and will not fall into the wall.
Step 5: Remove the old base and mount the new base
- Unscrew and remove the old thermostat base from the wall.
- Hold the new base in place, pull the labeled wires through the opening, and level it.
- Mark holes if needed, install anchors if required, and screw the new base to the wall without overtightening.
Check: The old base is removed cleanly. · The new base is level and firmly mounted. · The wire opening is centered and the wires pass through freely.
Step 6: Connect the wires to the new thermostat base
- Trim and re-strip wire ends only if needed, following the new thermostat instructions.
- Insert or attach each labeled wire to the matching terminal on the new base.
- Gently tug each wire to confirm it is secure, and ensure no bare copper is exposed beyond the terminal.
Check: Each wire matches the correct terminal label. · All connections are snug and secure. · No loose strands or excess bare wire are visible.
Step 7: Attach the thermostat and restore power
- Install batteries if the thermostat requires them.
- Snap or screw the thermostat face onto the mounted base.
- Restore power at the breaker and service switch.
Check: The thermostat is fully seated on the base. · Power has been restored. · The thermostat powers on or display activates as expected.
Step 8: Configure and test the system
- Set up date, time, Wi-Fi, or system settings if required by the model.
- Test heating by raising the setpoint and waiting for the system to respond.
- Test cooling by lowering the setpoint if outdoor conditions and manufacturer guidance allow, and verify the fan setting works correctly.
Check: The thermostat completes setup without errors. · Heating responds correctly when called. · Cooling and fan operation respond correctly, if applicable.
