Tools

• Pressure washer
• Wide fan spray nozzle
• Garden hose
• Broom

Materials

• Deck cleaner suitable for your deck material
• Water

Safety

• Wear eye protection, gloves, long pants, and slip-resistant footwear.
• Start with the lowest pressure setting and a wide fan nozzle.
• Test the spray on a small hidden area before cleaning the whole deck.
• Keep the wand moving and do not hold the spray in one spot.
• Maintain a safe distance from the deck surface to avoid gouging wood.
• Do not spray upward into board seams, gaps, rail joints, or siding.
• Keep people, pets, and electrical cords away from the work area.
• Wet decking is slippery; move carefully and let the deck dry fully before normal use.

Steps

1. Step 1: Clear and inspect the deck

   • Remove furniture, planters, rugs, and other items from the deck.
   • Sweep off leaves, dirt, and loose debris.
   • Inspect for loose boards, popped fasteners, splinters, rot, or damaged railings.
   • Cover or avoid nearby electrical outlets, lights, and anything that should not get wet.

Check: The deck surface is clear of obstacles and loose debris. · You have identified any damaged areas that should not be pressure washed aggressively.

2. Step 2: Set up the washer safely

   • Connect the pressure washer according to the manufacturer instructions.
   • Install a wide fan nozzle and choose the lowest practical pressure setting.
   • Run water through the system before starting if required by your machine.
   • Plan to work from the house outward or in a consistent direction along the boards.

Check: The machine is connected properly and operating normally. · A wide fan tip is installed and the pressure is set low.

3. Step 3: Test a small hidden area

   • Choose an inconspicuous spot on the deck.
   • Hold the wand at a moderate distance from the surface and spray with the grain.
   • Keep the nozzle moving in smooth passes.
   • Adjust distance before increasing pressure; use only as much force as needed to clean.

Check: The test area looks cleaner without fuzzy wood fibers, gouges, or visible damage. · You know the distance and speed that clean effectively and safely.

4. Step 4: Apply cleaner if needed

   • If the deck has mildew, grime, or heavy staining, apply a deck cleaner labeled for your deck material.
   • Follow the product directions for dilution, dwell time, and rinsing.
   • Do not let cleaner dry on the surface.

Check: Cleaner has been applied only if needed. · You are following the cleaner label instructions exactly.

5. Step 5: Wash the deck boards

   • Pressure wash one or two boards at a time using long, overlapping passes.
   • Keep the wand moving steadily along the grain.
   • Maintain a consistent distance from the surface.
   • Avoid spraying directly into gaps, joints, rail posts, or under siding.
   • Work methodically across the deck to avoid missed spots and overlap marks.

Check: The deck is becoming evenly clean without streaks or lap marks. · The wood surface is not splintering, furrowing, or becoming fuzzy.

6. Step 6: Rinse and review

   • Rinse away any remaining cleaner or loosened dirt.
   • Check corners, edges, stairs, and around railings for missed areas.
   • Touch up lightly rather than repeatedly blasting one spot.

Check: No cleaner residue or heavy dirt remains on the deck. · The surface looks uniformly cleaned.

7. Step 7: Dry the deck completely

   • Allow the deck to dry fully before replacing furniture or walking on it normally.
   • If you plan to stain or seal the deck, wait until the wood is fully dry per product guidance.

Check: The deck is dry to the touch and no longer slippery. · The surface is ready for normal use or for the next finishing step.
