Clean Gutters
Clean gutters by safely setting up a ladder, removing debris, flushing the gutter channel and downspouts, and checking that water drains properly.
Tools
- sturdy ladder
- gutter scoop or small plastic scoop
- garden hose with spray nozzle
- bucket or debris bag
- trowel for compacted debris
- work gloves
- safety glasses
Materials
- water
Safety
- Use a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground and have someone spot you if possible.
- Maintain three points of contact on the ladder and do not overreach; climb down and reposition instead.
- Wear gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and slip-resistant shoes.
- Check for overhead power lines before placing or climbing the ladder.
- Do not work in wet, windy, or icy conditions.
- Place debris into a bucket or bag instead of throwing it to the ground.
- Watch for sharp metal edges, nails, insects, birds, or animal nests in the gutters.
- If the gutters are very high, the roof is steep, or the ladder setup feels unstable, stop and hire a licensed professional.
Steps
Step 1: Prepare the area and gather tools
- Choose a dry, calm day with good visibility.
- Gather your ladder, scoop, hose, bucket or debris bag, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Walk around the house and identify gutter runs, downspouts, uneven ground, landscaping obstacles, and any overhead wires.
- Move outdoor items out of the work area and plan where to reposition the ladder as you go.
Check: Weather is dry and calm. · All needed tools are within reach before climbing. · The ground and ladder locations are clear of obstacles and power-line hazards.
Step 2: Set up the ladder safely
- Place the ladder on firm, level ground next to the gutter section you will clean first.
- Angle and open the ladder according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- If possible, have another person steady the base while you climb.
- Keep the bucket attached securely or positioned so you can transfer debris without overreaching.
Check: The ladder feels stable and does not wobble. · You can reach the gutter comfortably without leaning far to either side. · A safe path to climb up and down is clear.
Step 3: Remove loose gutter debris
- Climb the ladder carefully and stop at a comfortable working height.
- Use a gutter scoop or gloved hand to remove leaves, twigs, and sludge from the gutter.
- Place debris into the bucket or bag as you work.
- Use a small trowel only if debris is compacted and difficult to lift.
- Work in short sections, then climb down and reposition the ladder instead of stretching.
Check: The gutter channel is visibly clear of leaves and heavy buildup in the section you cleaned. · Debris is collected in the bucket or bag, not scattered below. · You did not need to lean or twist to reach the work area.
Step 4: Flush the gutters with water
- After removing debris, use a garden hose to flush the gutter starting at the end opposite the downspout.
- Spray along the channel to wash out small particles and check water flow.
- Observe whether water moves freely toward the downspout without pooling.
Check: Water flows steadily toward the downspout. · No major clogs remain in the cleaned section. · The gutter does not have standing water after flushing.
Step 5: Clear and test the downspouts
- Direct the hose into the downspout opening to test drainage.
- If water backs up, try flushing the downspout from the top with the hose.
- If needed, move to the bottom outlet and flush upward carefully to loosen the clog.
- Repeat until water runs out freely at the bottom.
Check: Water exits the downspout strongly and continuously. · There is no backup into the gutter channel. · The downspout appears clear after testing.
Step 6: Inspect the gutters and clean up
- Look for loose brackets, separated joints, rust, cracks, sagging sections, or leaking seams while the gutter is wet.
- Note any damage for later repair.
- Climb down, move the ladder, and repeat the process for the remaining sections.
- Bag the debris and clean the work area when finished.
Check: All gutter sections and downspouts have been cleaned and tested. · Any visible damage has been noted. · The area below is cleaned up and free of debris.
