Materials

• LVP flooring planks
• Manufacturer-approved underlayment if required
• Transition strips
• Quarter round or base trim if needed
• Manufacturer-recommended adhesive if using glue-down LVP
• Floor patch or leveling compound if needed

Safety

• Read the flooring manufacturer’s installation guide before starting.
• Wear safety glasses and gloves when cutting planks.
• Use knee pads to reduce strain during floor work.
• Cut planks on a stable surface and keep hands clear of blades.
• Use a dust mask if cutting creates dust.
• Verify the subfloor is dry and structurally sound before installation.
• Maintain the required expansion gap around walls, cabinets, and fixed objects.
• Do not install over severe subfloor damage, active leaks, or major moisture problems without professional repair.

Steps

1. Step 1: Check the product requirements and room conditions

   • Read the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific LVP product before opening all boxes.
   • Confirm whether the product is click-lock or glue-down and whether underlayment is built in or separately required.
   • Check the room temperature, humidity, and acclimation requirements listed by the manufacturer.
   • Measure the room and inspect door clearances, transitions, and fixed objects such as cabinets or islands.

Check: You know the exact installation method required for your product. · The room conditions meet the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity limits. · You have confirmed whether acclimation and underlayment are required.

2. Step 2: Prepare the subfloor

   • Remove furniture, old flooring if required, and any debris from the area.
   • Take off baseboards or shoe molding carefully if you plan to reinstall them.
   • Clean the subfloor thoroughly so it is free of dust, dirt, grease, staples, and loose material.
   • Check the floor for flatness using a long straightedge or level.
   • Fill low spots and sand or correct high spots as needed to meet the manufacturer’s flatness tolerance.
   • Repair any damaged or squeaky subfloor sections before proceeding.

Check: The subfloor is clean, dry, and structurally sound. · The floor is flat within the manufacturer’s specified tolerance. · There are no protruding fasteners, soft spots, or active moisture issues.

3. Step 3: Install approved underlayment if required

   • Only install underlayment if your product instructions allow or require it.
   • Roll out the underlayment in the direction recommended by the manufacturer.
   • Trim it neatly and tape seams if specified by the product instructions.
   • Do not overlap underlayment unless the manufacturer specifically directs it.

Check: The underlayment is approved for the flooring product. · The underlayment lies flat without bumps, folds, or unsupported overlaps.

4. Step 4: Plan the layout

   • Decide the plank direction, usually parallel to the longest wall or main sight line unless the manufacturer recommends otherwise.
   • Measure the room width to estimate the width of the first and last rows.
   • Adjust the starting row if needed so the final row is not an extremely narrow strip.
   • Snap a chalk line or establish a straight reference line for the first rows.
   • Plan to stagger end joints according to the manufacturer’s minimum spacing requirement.

Check: The first rows will run straight. · The last row will not be a small sliver if the layout is adjusted properly. · Your end-joint stagger meets the product requirements.

5. Step 5: Install the first row

   • Place spacers along the starting wall to maintain the required expansion gap.
   • Lay the first plank with the correct side facing the wall based on the locking profile.
   • Continue the first row, locking or placing planks according to the product instructions.
   • Cut the last plank of the row to length, leaving the required expansion gap at the end wall.
   • Use the cutoff as the next row starter only if it meets the minimum length requirement.

Check: The first row is straight and fully seated. · Expansion gaps are maintained at walls and fixed objects. · No plank edges are lifted or misaligned.

6. Step 6: Install the remaining rows

   • Start the next row with a plank length that creates the required stagger from the previous row.
   • Angle and lock click planks carefully or apply adhesive as directed for glue-down products.
   • Use a tapping block and rubber mallet only as recommended to tighten joints without damaging edges.
   • Continue row by row, checking alignment frequently.
   • Cut around door jambs, vents, and other obstacles carefully using the proper tool.
   • Undercut door casings if needed so the flooring can slide underneath while still maintaining expansion space where required.

Check: Joints are tight and rows remain straight. · End joints are properly staggered. · Cuts around obstacles fit cleanly without pinching the floor.

7. Step 7: Fit the final row

   • Measure the gap from the previous row to the wall at several points.
   • Rip the final row to width while preserving the required expansion gap.
   • Install the final row using a pull bar if needed to seat the joints.
   • Avoid forcing planks into place, which can damage the locking system.

Check: The final row is fully seated and not overly tight to the wall. · The expansion gap is still present along the perimeter.

8. Step 8: Install transitions and trim

   • Install transition strips at doorways or where the flooring meets other surfaces, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
   • Reinstall baseboards or add quarter round or shoe molding if needed.
   • Fasten trim to the wall or baseboard, not through floating LVP.
   • Clean the floor and remove spacers after trim is installed.

Check: Transitions are secure and appropriate for the height change or flooring change. · Trim covers the expansion gap without trapping the floor. · The floor can still move slightly as a floating system if applicable.

9. Step 9: Inspect and finish up

   • Walk the floor and check for soft spots, lifted edges, gaps, or damaged planks.
   • Clean the surface using a manufacturer-approved method.
   • Save extra planks for future repairs and keep the product information.
   • Follow any manufacturer guidance on when to move furniture back into the room.

Check: The floor feels solid and looks consistent across the room. · There are no visible joint gaps, rocking planks, or trapped edges. · Leftover material and product details are stored for repairs.
