- Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using any descaling product.
- Rinse the kettle several times after descaling to remove any residue.
- Dry the outside and base area fully before plugging the kettle back in.
Steps
Step 1: Prepare the kettle
- Unplug the kettle.
- Make sure the kettle is completely cool.
- Open the lid and empty any remaining water.
- Check the manual for any specific descaling warnings or product recommendations.
Check: The kettle is unplugged and cool to the touch. · There is no water left inside. · You have confirmed any manufacturer guidance.
Step 2: Add descaling solution
- For vinegar: fill the kettle with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water, using enough to cover the limescale inside.
- For a commercial descaler: follow the product label for the correct dilution and fill level.
- Do not overfill the kettle.
Check: The limescale areas are covered by the solution. · The kettle is filled only to a safe level. · The solution matches the product instructions if using a descaler.
Step 3: Let the solution work
- If your manufacturer allows it, boil the solution once to speed up descaling.
- Then switch the kettle off, unplug it if needed, and let the solution sit for 15–20 minutes.
- If the manual advises against boiling vinegar or descaler, just let the solution soak as directed.
Check: The solution has had enough contact time to loosen scale. · You followed the manufacturer’s guidance about heating the solution.
Step 4: Empty and wipe
- Pour the used solution down the sink.
- Use a soft sponge or cloth to gently wipe the inside surfaces.
- Do not use abrasive scrubbers that could damage the interior.
- If heavy scale remains, repeat the descaling process once more.
Check: Loose scale has been removed. · The inside surface looks cleaner. · No abrasive tools were used.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly
- Fill the kettle with clean water, swish it around, and empty it.
- Repeat this rinse 2–3 times.
- If you used vinegar or descaler and the smell remains, boil fresh water once, discard it, and rinse again.
Check: There is no visible residue inside the kettle. · There is little to no vinegar or chemical smell remaining. · The kettle has been rinsed multiple times.
Step 6: Dry and return to use
- Wipe the outside of the kettle with a dry cloth if needed.
- Make sure the base area, plug, and exterior are dry.
- Place the kettle back on its base and plug it in only when fully dry.
Check: The kettle exterior is dry. · The base and plug area are dry. · The kettle is ready for normal use.
