Steps
Step 1: Measure and rinse the rice
- Measure your rice based on how many servings you want.
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water looks less cloudy, if desired.
Check: Rice is measured and ready to cook. · Any rinse water has mostly cleared.
Step 2: Add rice and water to the pot
- Place the rice in a pot.
- Add water using the ratio recommended for your rice type. A common starting point for white rice is 1 cup rice to 2 cups water.
- Add a pinch of salt if you want more flavor.
Check: Rice and water are in the pot. · The water level matches the rice type you are using.
Step 3: Bring to a boil
- Set the pot over medium-high heat.
- Bring the water to a boil uncovered.
Check: The water is actively boiling. · No foam or water is spilling over the pot.
Step 4: Cover and simmer
- Reduce the heat to low as soon as it boils.
- Cover the pot with a lid.
- Let the rice cook without lifting the lid repeatedly.
Check: The pot is covered securely. · The heat is low and the rice is simmering gently, not boiling hard.
Step 5: Rest the rice
- When the cooking time is up, turn off the heat.
- Leave the lid on and let the rice rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
Check: The rice has had time to finish steaming. · Most of the water has been absorbed.
Step 6: Fluff and serve
- Remove the lid carefully to avoid steam.
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork.
- Serve warm.
Check: The grains look tender and separated. · There is no excess water left in the pot.
