Build Raised Garden Bed
Build a simple, durable raised garden bed by choosing a level location, assembling a wood frame, positioning it, and filling it with suitable soil for planting.
Tools
- Tape measure
- Shovel
- Level
- Drill/driver
- Saw
- Speed square
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
Materials
- Garden-safe, weather-resistant lumber
- Exterior-grade screws
- Wood stakes or corner posts
- Cardboard or landscape fabric (optional)
- Raised bed soil mix or topsoil and compost
- Mulch (optional)
Safety
- Check for buried utility lines before digging or driving stakes into the ground.
- Wear gloves when handling lumber, screws, and soil.
- Use safety glasses when cutting wood or driving screws.
- Cut wood on a stable surface and keep hands clear of the blade.
- Use lumber that is appropriate for garden use, especially for edible crops.
- Get help lifting long boards or moving large amounts of soil.
Steps
Step 1: Plan the bed size and location
- Choose a level spot with adequate sunlight and easy access to water.
- Pick a practical size, such as 4 feet wide so you can reach the center from either side.
- Decide on the bed height based on your plants and how much soil you want to add.
Check: The site gets suitable sun for what you plan to grow. · The bed size fits the space and allows room to walk around it. · You have confirmed there are no buried utilities where you will dig or anchor.
Step 2: Measure and cut the lumber
- Measure the boards for the desired length and width of the bed.
- Mark cut lines clearly and cut the boards to size.
- If using corner posts or stakes, cut them to the required length.
Check: All boards match the planned dimensions. · Cuts are straight enough for tight corners. · Corner posts or stakes are ready before assembly.
Step 3: Assemble the frame
- Lay the boards on a flat surface in a rectangle.
- Use a speed square to align the corners.
- Screw the boards together at each corner, attaching them to corner posts or by fastening overlapping corners securely.
Check: The frame is square and corners are aligned. · Screws are driven securely without splitting the wood excessively. · The frame feels rigid when lifted slightly.
Step 4: Prepare the ground
- Clear grass, weeds, and debris from the bed area.
- Loosen or lightly level the soil beneath the bed with a shovel.
- Place cardboard or landscape fabric at the bottom if you want extra weed suppression.
Check: The ground under the bed is mostly level. · Large roots, rocks, and heavy weeds have been removed. · Any weed barrier lies flat and covers the base area.
Step 5: Set and secure the bed
- Move the frame into position.
- Check it for level from side to side and front to back.
- Drive stakes or use braces if needed, especially for taller beds or loose soil conditions.
Check: The bed sits flat on the ground with minimal rocking. · The frame is level or intentionally set to follow a slight grade. · Tall or long sides are braced well enough to resist soil pressure.
Step 6: Fill with soil
- Add raised bed soil mix or a blend of topsoil and compost.
- Rake the surface roughly level and break up clumps.
- Leave a little space below the top edge so water does not run off immediately.
Check: The bed is evenly filled. · Soil depth is appropriate for the plants you want to grow. · The soil surface sits slightly below the top rim.
Step 7: Finish and plant
- Water the soil lightly to help it settle.
- Top up soil if it drops significantly after watering.
- Plant seeds or starts and add mulch if desired.
Check: The soil has settled evenly after watering. · Plants are spaced appropriately. · The bed is ready for regular watering and maintenance.
