Rotate Car Tires

Tools

• Owner's manual
• Lug wrench or breaker bar
• Floor jack
• Jack stands
• Torque wrench
• Wheel chocks
• Tire pressure gauge

Safety

• Work on a flat, stable surface and set the parking brake.
• Chock the wheels that remain on the ground before lifting the vehicle.
• Loosen lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
• Use the jack only to raise the vehicle; always support it with jack stands before removing any wheel.
• Follow the owner's manual for jack points, rotation pattern, and lug nut torque specification.
• Some tires are directional or vehicles may have staggered sizes; do not swap sides or axles unless the manual allows it.
• Keep hands and feet clear when lowering the vehicle.
• After rotation, torque lug nuts properly and recheck them after a short drive if recommended by the manufacturer.

Steps

1. Step 1: Confirm the correct rotation pattern

   • Check the owner's manual to find the approved tire rotation pattern for your vehicle.
   • Verify whether your tires are directional, asymmetrical, or part of a staggered setup with different front and rear sizes.
   • If the tires are directional, keep each tire rolling in the same direction unless it is remounted on the wheel by a tire shop.

Check: You know the exact front-to-rear or cross-pattern to use. · You have confirmed whether left-right swapping is allowed.

2. Step 2: Prepare the vehicle and tools

   • Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and set the parking brake.
   • Place wheel chocks at the appropriate wheels to prevent movement.
   • Gather the jack, jack stands, lug wrench, torque wrench, and tire pressure gauge.
   • If your vehicle has wheel covers or center caps, remove them if needed to access the lug nuts.

Check: The vehicle cannot roll. · All required tools are within reach before lifting begins.

3. Step 3: Loosen the lug nuts slightly

   • Before lifting the vehicle, break each lug nut loose about a quarter-turn on the wheels you plan to remove.
   • Do not fully remove the lug nuts while the tires are still on the ground.

Check: Each lug nut has been loosened slightly but remains threaded on. · The wheels are still seated firmly on the hubs.

4. Step 4: Lift and support the vehicle safely

   • Position the floor jack at the manufacturer-approved lifting point and raise the vehicle.
   • Place jack stands at the proper support points and lower the vehicle onto the stands securely.
   • If rotating all four tires at once, make sure the vehicle is fully supported and stable before removing any wheel.

Check: The vehicle is resting securely on jack stands, not only on the jack. · The vehicle feels stable with no wobble before you proceed.

5. Step 5: Remove and rotate the wheels

   • Remove the loosened lug nuts and take off the wheels.
   • Move each wheel to its new position according to the rotation pattern from the manual.
   • While the wheels are off, inspect tread wear, sidewalls, and visible brake components for obvious issues.

Check: Each wheel has been moved to the correct new position. · No tire shows obvious damage, severe uneven wear, or exposed cords.

6. Step 6: Reinstall the wheels by hand

   • Place each wheel onto the hub and hand-thread the lug nuts to avoid cross-threading.
   • Snug the lug nuts lightly in a crisscross or star pattern so the wheel seats evenly.
   • Do not fully torque the lug nuts while the wheel is hanging free unless your manufacturer specifically allows it.

Check: All lug nuts thread on smoothly by hand. · Each wheel sits flush against the hub.

7. Step 7: Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts

   • Raise the vehicle slightly if needed, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle until the tires contact the ground.
   • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the specification in the owner's manual.
   • Reinstall any wheel covers or center caps if removed.

Check: All lug nuts are tightened to the correct torque specification. · Wheel covers or caps are secure, if applicable.

8. Step 8: Set tire pressure and finish up

   • Check and adjust all tire pressures to the values on the driver's door placard or in the owner's manual.
   • If your vehicle uses TPMS, perform any required reset or relearn procedure.
   • Take a short test drive and confirm there is no vibration, pulling, or warning light related to the tires.

Check: All tires are set to the correct pressure. · No abnormal vibration, pulling, or new warning lights appear after the test drive.
