Safety
- Turn off the correct breaker before touching the outlet or removing the cover plate.
- Verify the outlet is de-energized with a non-contact tester and a multimeter before handling wires.
- Match the replacement outlet to the circuit rating and required type, such as 15A, 20A, tamper-resistant, or GFCI where required.
- Connect hot wires to brass screws, neutral wires to silver screws, and ground to the green screw.
- Do not continue if you find aluminum wiring, burnt insulation, melted parts, or a damaged electrical box.
- Avoid using backstab push-in connections if possible; use screw terminals for a more secure connection.
- Make sure no bare copper is exposed outside the terminals or connectors.
- If the outlet is part of a GFCI-protected, switched, split, or multi-wire circuit and you are unsure of the wiring, stop and call a licensed electrician.
Steps
Step 1: Shut off the circuit and confirm power is off
- Locate the correct breaker and switch it off.
- If possible, keep others from turning it back on while you work.
- Remove the outlet cover plate.
- Use a non-contact voltage tester at the outlet slots and around the box.
- Pull the outlet out slightly and verify with a multimeter that there is no voltage between hot and neutral, hot and ground, and neutral and ground.
Check: The tester shows no live voltage at the outlet. · The multimeter confirms the circuit is de-energized.
Step 2: Inspect the existing wiring and document connections
- Unscrew the outlet from the box and gently pull it out without stressing the wires.
- Take a clear photo of the existing wire connections before disconnecting anything.
- Identify the hot wire on brass, neutral on silver, and ground on green or bonded metal box.
- Check whether there is one cable or multiple cables connected, and note any tab breaks, pigtails, or unusual wiring.
Check: You have a clear reference photo of the original wiring. · You understand which wire is hot, neutral, and ground before disconnecting.
Step 3: Stop if you find unsafe or unclear conditions
- Inspect for scorch marks, melted plastic, cracked insulation, loose conductors, corrosion, or an overcrowded box.
- Look for aluminum branch wiring, usually dull silver rather than copper.
- Do not proceed if the wiring setup is confusing or does not match a standard replacement.
Check: There is no visible damage requiring repair beyond a simple outlet replacement. · The wiring is copper and in serviceable condition, or you have decided to call a professional.
Step 4: Disconnect the old outlet
- Loosen the terminal screws and remove the wires from the old outlet.
- If wires were inserted into backstab holes, release them using the slot on the back or cut and re-strip the ends if needed.
- Straighten or re-form the wire ends with pliers.
- Strip fresh insulation only if needed, keeping strip length appropriate for the new outlet terminals.
Check: All wire ends are clean and undamaged. · The wires are long enough to reconnect securely.
Step 5: Connect the new outlet correctly
- Confirm the new outlet matches the old one in rating and type unless you are intentionally upgrading to a code-required equivalent.
- Attach the ground wire to the green screw.
- Attach the neutral wire or wires to the silver screw terminals.
- Attach the hot wire or wires to the brass screw terminals.
- If there are multiple conductors that require a splice, use an approved wire connector and a pigtail rather than doubling under an unsuitable terminal.
- Wrap each wire clockwise around the screw so tightening the screw pulls the wire in.
- Tighten all terminal screws securely.
Check: Hot is on brass, neutral is on silver, and ground is on green. · No bare copper extends beyond the terminal screws.
Step 6: Reinstall the outlet and cover
- Carefully fold the wires back into the box without sharp kinks or pinching.
- Mount the outlet straight and tighten the mounting screws.
- Install the cover plate.
Check: The outlet sits flush and secure in the box. · The cover plate is installed and nothing conductive is exposed.
Step 7: Restore power and test the outlet
- Turn the breaker back on.
- Use an outlet tester to confirm correct wiring and grounding.
- Plug in a small device to verify normal operation.
- If the outlet is GFCI-protected or a GFCI device, test and reset it according to its instructions.
Check: The outlet tester indicates correct wiring. · The breaker stays on and the outlet works normally.
