Replace Car Air Filter
Replace the engine air filter by opening the air filter housing, removing the old filter, cleaning out loose debris, and installing the correct new filter in the same orientation.

- Make sure the new filter sits fully and the housing is completely closed before starting the engine.
Steps
Step 1: Prepare the vehicle and parts
- Park on a level surface and turn the engine off.
- Remove the key and allow hot engine components to cool.
- Confirm you have the correct replacement air filter by matching the part number to your vehicle.
- Open the hood and locate the engine air filter housing, using the owner's manual if needed.
Check: The engine is off and cool. · You have the correct replacement filter. · You can clearly identify the air filter housing.
Step 2: Open the air filter housing
- Inspect how the housing is secured; it may use clips, screws, or tabs.
- Release the clips or loosen the screws carefully without forcing anything.
- Lift or open the housing enough to access the filter while noting how everything is positioned.
Check: All clips or screws are released without damage. · The housing is open enough to remove the filter. · You understand how the cover fits back into place.
Step 3: Remove the old filter
- Lift the old air filter straight out of the housing.
- Note the filter's orientation and how the sealing edge sits in the housing.
- Check the old filter for heavy dirt, leaves, or damage.
Check: The old filter is fully removed. · You know the correct orientation for the new filter. · No loose debris has fallen into the intake opening.
Step 4: Clean the housing
- Inspect the inside of the air box for dust, leaves, or other debris.
- Wipe the housing with a clean dry cloth or shop towel.
- Do not push dirt into the intake tube or use excessive force.
Check: Loose debris is removed from the housing. · The intake opening remains clean and unobstructed. · The housing sealing surfaces are clean enough for the new filter to seat properly.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Place the new filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the sealing edge is fully seated all the way around.
- Reposition the housing cover carefully without disturbing the filter.
Check: The new filter is installed in the correct orientation. · The filter is sitting flat with no folded edges or gaps. · The housing cover aligns correctly over the filter.
Step 6: Close the housing and verify
- Secure all clips, tabs, or screws evenly.
- Check that the cover is fully closed and nothing is pinched or misaligned.
- Start the engine and listen for any unusual intake noise or rattling.
- Look for any warning lights and recheck the housing if anything seems off.
Check: All clips, tabs, or screws are secured. · The housing is fully closed and sealed. · The engine runs normally with no unusual sounds or warning lights.
