Safety
- Test any cleaner on a hidden area first to check for color change or damage.
- Blot stains instead of scrubbing hard to avoid damaging carpet fibers and spreading the stain.
- Use only small amounts of liquid so you do not soak the carpet or pad underneath.
- Follow the product label directions for any commercial carpet cleaner.
- Keep the area ventilated while cleaning and drying.
- Do not mix cleaning products unless the label says it is safe to do so.
Steps
Step 1: Prepare the area
- Pick up any solids gently with a spoon or soft brush.
- Blot excess liquid with a clean white cloth or paper towels.
- Vacuum the stained area and surrounding carpet to remove loose dirt.
Check: No loose debris remains on or around the stain. · Excess liquid has been blotted up, not rubbed in.
Step 2: Choose and test a cleaner
- Identify the stain type if possible, such as food, drink, mud, or pet mess.
- Use a carpet-safe stain remover, or make a mild solution of warm water with a few drops of dish soap.
- For lingering odor or light staining, you can also use a small amount of white vinegar diluted with water.
- Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area and wait a few minutes to check for discoloration or damage.
Check: The cleaner does not cause color bleeding or fiber damage in the test spot. · You have selected a cleaner suitable for the stain and carpet type.
Step 3: Treat the stain
- Apply a small amount of cleaner to a clean cloth or lightly onto the stain.
- Blot from the outside edge toward the center to keep the stain from spreading.
- Repeat with a fresh section of cloth until the stain begins to lift.
- For dried stains, let the cleaner sit briefly as directed, then blot again.
Check: The stain is getting lighter with blotting. · The carpet is damp, not soaked.
Step 4: Rinse if needed
- If the cleaner label says to rinse, lightly blot the area with a cloth dampened with plain water.
- Blot again with a dry cloth or paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- If needed, repeat once more to remove cleaner residue.
Check: There is no obvious cleaner residue left in the carpet. · The area feels only slightly damp after blotting.
Step 5: Dry and finish
- Place dry cloths over the area and press gently to absorb remaining moisture.
- Sprinkle a little baking soda only if needed for odor after the area is nearly dry, then vacuum it up later.
- Use ventilation or a fan to dry the carpet fully.
- Vacuum the area once dry to restore the carpet texture.
Check: The carpet is fully dry to the touch. · No odor or visible stain remains, or it is significantly reduced.
