Iron a Dress Shirt

Tools

• Iron
• Ironing board
• Hanger

Materials

• Dress shirt
• Water for steam if appropriate

Safety

• Check the shirt’s care label and set the iron to the correct heat for the fabric.
• Test the iron on a small hidden area first if you are unsure about the fabric response.
• Do not leave the iron sitting in one spot, as it can scorch or shine the fabric.
• Keep the iron upright when not in use and unplug it when finished.
• Use steam only if the fabric and iron manufacturer instructions allow it.

Steps

1. Step 1: Prepare the shirt and iron

   • Read the care label and choose the correct heat setting for the shirt fabric.
   • Set up the ironing board and plug in the iron.
   • Fill the iron with water only if the manufacturer recommends it and you plan to use steam.
   • Make sure the shirt is clean and slightly damp, or plan to use the iron’s steam function.
   • Button the top button if it helps keep the shirt aligned while you work.

Check: The care label has been checked. · The iron is set to the correct temperature. · The shirt is ready to iron and not overly wet.

2. Step 2: Iron the collar

   • Lay the collar flat with the underside facing up.
   • Iron from the collar points inward toward the center to help avoid creases at the tips.
   • Flip the collar and iron the outer side the same way.
   • Fold the collar into its natural position and press lightly along the fold if needed.

Check: The collar lies flat without ripples. · There are no unwanted creases at the collar points.

3. Step 3: Iron the cuffs

   • Unbutton the cuff and lay it flat.
   • Iron the inside of the cuff first, then the outside.
   • Work around buttons carefully and avoid pressing directly over them.
   • Repeat for the second cuff.

Check: Both cuffs are smooth on both sides. · The fabric around the buttons is flat and not puckered.

4. Step 4: Iron the sleeves

   • Lay one sleeve flat on the board, aligning the seams neatly.
   • Iron from the shoulder toward the cuff in long smooth passes.
   • If you want a sharper crease, press along the top edge consistently; if not, avoid pressing a hard fold line.
   • Turn and adjust the sleeve as needed to iron the other side.
   • Repeat for the second sleeve.

Check: Each sleeve is smooth from shoulder to cuff. · Any crease is intentional and even on both sleeves.

5. Step 5: Iron the shoulders and yoke

   • Place the shirt over the narrow end of the ironing board so one shoulder section lies flat.
   • Iron the yoke and shoulder area, moving the shirt around the board as needed.
   • Repeat on the other shoulder until the full upper back area is pressed.

Check: The shoulder and upper back areas are smooth. · There are no small wrinkles near the armholes or yoke seams.

6. Step 6: Iron the front panels

   • Lay one front panel flat on the board.
   • Iron around the placket, pockets, and buttons carefully, using the tip of the iron around tight areas.
   • Press from top to bottom in smooth passes.
   • Repeat on the other front panel.

Check: Both front panels are smooth and flat. · The placket and pocket areas are neat without missed wrinkles.

7. Step 7: Iron the back

   • Spread the back panel across the ironing board.
   • Iron in sections from top to bottom, repositioning the shirt as needed.
   • Use steam or light passes over stubborn wrinkles, keeping the iron moving.

Check: The back panel is smooth across the center and sides. · No section shows shine or heat marks.

8. Step 8: Finish and hang the shirt

   • Inspect the shirt for missed wrinkles at the collar, cuffs, side seams, and hem.
   • Touch up any small areas as needed.
   • Turn off and unplug the iron.
   • Hang the shirt immediately on a hanger to keep it wrinkle-free.

Check: The shirt is fully pressed and ready to wear. · The iron is turned off and unplugged. · The shirt is hanging neatly.
