Hem Pants by Hand
Hem pants by hand by marking the right length, folding the fabric evenly, securing it with pins or basting, and sewing a neat blind or slip stitch for a clean finish.
Tools
- Hand sewing needle
- Pins
- Fabric scissors
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Iron
Materials
- Thread matching the pants
- Pants to hem
Safety
- Handle the needle and pins carefully to avoid punctures.
- Cut fabric slowly and keep fingers clear of the scissors.
- Use the iron on an appropriate heat setting for the fabric.
- Unplug the iron when not in use.
Steps
Step 1: Mark the hem length
- Try on the pants with the shoes you plan to wear most often.
- Fold the pant leg up to the desired finished length.
- Mark the new hem line with a pin or small fabric mark.
- Repeat on the other leg and compare both sides for even length.
Check: Both pant legs are marked at the same finished length. · The length looks right when standing naturally.
Step 2: Prepare the fold
- Turn the pants inside out.
- Measure from the original hem or bottom edge to make both legs even.
- Fold the raw edge up to create the new hem allowance.
- If needed, fold the raw edge under for a cleaner inside finish.
- Press the fold with an iron to set a sharp crease.
Check: The fold depth is even all the way around each leg. · The hem crease holds its shape after pressing.
Step 3: Pin or baste the hem
- Pin the folded hem in place around the leg.
- Space pins evenly so the fabric stays flat.
- If the fabric shifts easily, baste with a few loose hand stitches before final sewing.
Check: The hem lies flat without twisting. · The folded edge stays in place when handled.
Step 4: Sew the hem by hand
- Thread the needle with matching thread and knot the end.
- Use a slip stitch or blind hem stitch to catch a tiny bit of the outer pant fabric and then the folded hem edge.
- Keep stitches small and evenly spaced as you work around the leg.
- Avoid pulling the thread too tight so the fabric does not pucker.
- Knot the thread securely at the end and trim it.
Check: Stitches are barely visible from the outside. · The hem feels secure and does not sag or gap.
Step 5: Finish and press
- Repeat the sewing on the second pant leg.
- Turn the pants right side out and compare both hems.
- Press both hems lightly for a smooth finish.
Check: Both pant legs are the same length. · The hem looks smooth and neat after pressing.
