Adjust Door Hinges
Tighten and, if necessary, reposition or replace door hinges to correct rubbing, sagging, or uneven gaps.
Tools
- Screwdriver that fits the hinge screws
- Door wedge or other sturdy support
- Drill and suitable bit, if replacing stripped screws
- Eye protection
Materials
- Longer replacement screws
- Suitable wood repair material or wall plug, if the existing screw holes no longer grip
Safety
- Wear eye protection when drilling or chiseling.
- Support the door before loosening any hinge screws.
- Do not remove all hinge pins or screws at once.
- Do not force the door, hinges, or latch.
- If the door is heavy, exterior-rated, fire-rated, or has damaged framing, call a qualified carpenter.
Steps
Step 1: Identify the alignment problem
- Close the door slowly and note whether it rubs at the top, bottom, latch side, or frame.
- Inspect the gaps around the door and check whether the latch lines up with the strike plate.
Check: You can identify the area where the door is rubbing or sagging. · The door opens and closes without being forced.
Step 2: Tighten the hinge screws
- Open the door and tighten every hinge screw with a correctly fitting screwdriver.
- Pay particular attention to the screws holding the hinges to the door frame.
- Tighten firmly, but stop when the hinge is secure to avoid stripping the screw or damaging the wood.
Check: No hinge moves when you gently push or pull it. · The screw heads are not stripped and the wood around the hinges is not cracking.
Step 3: Repair screws that do not grip
- If a screw spins without tightening, remove it and inspect the hole for damaged or missing wood.
- Replace it with a longer screw that securely reaches the framing, if suitable.
- If the wood is badly damaged, use an appropriate wood repair method before reinstalling the screw.
Check: The replacement screw grips firmly without splitting the frame. · The hinge sits flat against the door or frame.
Step 4: Recheck the door gaps
- Close the door and inspect the gaps on all sides.
- Open and close the door several times to see whether the rubbing or sagging has improved.
Check: The door closes without rubbing. · The latch aligns with the strike plate and the gaps look reasonably even.
Step 5: Adjust or replace a bent hinge
- If the door still sags, place a wedge under the door to support its weight.
- Remove one hinge pin at a time and avoid removing every hinge at once.
- Inspect the hinge for bending or damage, then gently adjust or replace it if necessary.
- Reinstall the hinge pin, remove the wedge carefully, and test the door.
Check: The door remains supported while the hinge is loosened. · The replacement or adjusted hinge sits flat and operates smoothly. · The door closes and latches without force.
